SACRAMENTO PHILHARMONIC & OPERA ANNOUNCES SPRING SOIRÉES DIGITAL SERIES

Presenting a Four-Concert Set of Works for Strings, Winds, and Brass & Percussion this Spring

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA – The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera (SP&O) is pleased to announce its new digital
series Spring Soirées for audiences to enjoy from their homes. The programs, conducted by Stuart Chafetz, will
showcase musicians from the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections from the SP&O.

Spring Soirées will begin on Saturday, April 24 with Seductive Strings as SP&O string players perform works by Grieg,
Albéniz, and Lecuona, featuring SP&O Principal Harpist Anna Maria Mendieta. Then, on Saturday, May 8, American
Masters will feature the works of America’s most celebrated composers, including Aaron Copland and John Williams.
On Saturday, May 22, SP&O musicians will perform the works of Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and others in Tchaikovsky
and More. The series will conclude on Saturday, June 5 with French Romance featuring a variety of French selections
from composers such as Debussy and Gounod, again showcasing Ms. Mendieta.

Each stream will begin at 7 PM, and then will be available on-demand afterwards. Each is provided as a “Thank You”
to those who have donated $25 or more to the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera’s Annual Fund. All streams are
available free of charge to subscribers and current ticketholders.

Executive Director Alice Sauro comments: “We remain committed to providing music to our region to inspire our
audiences, and bring new listeners to their Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera. This is a wonderful collection of
musical works showcasing the virtuosity of the orchestra’s musicians. Audiences have responded positively to these
digital offerings, and we look forward welcoming them when we can all safely return to in-person concerts.”

Each concert was recorded at the Mondavi Center’s Jackson Hall. Guest Conductor Stuart Chafetz, who curated the
programs with the musicians, is eager to perform again with the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera. “One of the
most compelling aspects of these concerts is the unique programmatic opportunity to feature some of the
repertoire’s best works. Patrons will be able to hear the musicians’ talent in a more intimate way and experience pieces that are not often programmed.”

More details regarding the Spring Soirées digital series will be announced in the coming weeks. For questions or comments, please contact (916) 476-5975 or email info@sacphilopera.org.

Digital Chamber Music Series Launched as Orchestra and Musicians Finalize Landmark Contract

PDF Download

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA — The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera (SP&O) is proud to announce its Fall Digital Chamber Music Series, bringing music into the homes of audiences via live stream as COVID restrictions continue. Additionally, it is pleased to announce that it has reached a collaborative agreement with its musicians in response to the pandemic for the 2020-21 season.

The SP&O Fall Digital Chamber Music Series will commence on November 21 with a recital by concertmaster Dan Flanagan. Then, in December, the SP&O will offer a two-week Beethoven Festival, commemorating the composer’s 250th birthday, featuring interviews, lectures, and some of Beethoven’s most magnificent chamber works, including String Quartet Op. 59 No. 1 and Wind Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103. Also in December, the SP&O will celebrate the season’s spirit with a holiday brass concert. All of these performances will feature the SP&O’s very own musicians.

Each stream is available free of charge to subscribers and current ticketholders. Each will also be provided as a “Thank You” to those donating $25 or more to the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera’s Annual Fund.

Executive Director Alice Sauro comments: “Audiences embraced us when we returned just over five years ago, and since then, they have kept almost every concert full. So many have experienced the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera in our home, and now, it gives us great pleasure to bring the orchestra to their homes. Our great community has waited seven months for music, and we are delighted to be bringing it back.”

These concerts are possible through a just-reached agreement with SP&O musicians for the abbreviated 2020- 21 season. Erika Miranda, Chair of the SP&O Orchestra Committee, commended the flexibility of her colleagues throughout the process. “All the musicians of the orchestra are very excited about returning to the stage with freshly expanded ways of connecting with our audiences through a new spectrum of live performances as well as exploring the many dynamic possibilities of the digital realm.”

The agreement guarantees a number of services for each musician and allows maximum artistic flexibility, important as the SP&O explores programming possibilities for 2021. The renovated SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center is set to re-open in the spring of 2021, and the SP&O is preparing to resume concerts in this space the moment COVID restrictions ease.

Board President Virginia A. Varela said, “Our collaborative spirit of innovation remains a core value and was our beacon as we fashioned this agreement. This harmony between musicians, board, management and community is the catalyst behind the credibility that has been established over the past five years artistically and financially. Budgets have balanced annually, and houses are filled with dedicated subscribers, defying a purported national trend.”

An announcement about the remainder of the 2020-21 season will come at a later date, and see below for further details regarding the Digital Chamber Series. For questions or comments, please contact (916) 476-5975 or email info@sacphilopera.org.

Dear SP&O Patrons,

Music is powerful. It provides beauty, solace, excitement, expression, and much more for all that hear it. We are bonded by the knowledge that music – and all of the arts – can illuminate the human experience in ways that often transcend mere words. How wonderful that we can experience this magic here in Sacramento!

I am honored to serve as the President of the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera as it continues to celebrate the connection between hard-working musicians, dedicated staff and leadership, and devoted community members like you.

That connection is more important than ever.  Though we may be physically separated at this time, your SP&O is developing ways we can share music with you on digital platforms.

We are ever so grateful for the incredible response from patrons like you during this time. And it is with appreciation for your steadfast generosity that we enthusiastically announce our participation in 2020 Big Day of Giving on May 7th.

Inspired by your support at this time, the SP&O Board of Directors and Executive Leadership is committed to making #BDOG2020 as impactful as possible, creating two matching challenges to ensure that the SP&O can continue to provide inspiring musical experiences. Preschedule your gift now or make a gift on May 7th to help us unlock:

  • $10,000 in our SP&O Board and Executive Matching Challenge – all gifts will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling your impact
  • An additional $5,000 SP&O Board and Executive New Donor Challenge that will be awarded if we can receive support from 50 new donor households

For more information on the SP&O and the Big Day of Giving, please visit  https://www.bigdayofgiving.org/SacPhilOpera.

I hope you will join our efforts by making a gift to the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera on Big Day of Giving. Together, we can continue to inspire joy in our community – now, and again when we are all united.

Thank you for your consideration! Wishing you all the best from our musical family to yours.

Sincerely,

Virginia Varela President, SP&O Board of Directors

For Immediate Release

April 10, 2020

Dear Friend:

With all of us homebound, it’s nice to have something to look forward to!

The Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera has finalized the new dates for the final three concerts postponed this season…

  • Saint-Saens’ Organ Symphony will now be performed October 2 & 3, 2020, again at Fremont Presbyterian Church with the same artists.
  • Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” will now be performed Saturday, November 28, 2020 (Thanksgiving weekend!), still “in the round” on the main floor of Memorial Auditorium with the same artists.
  • And the finale of your season – the return concert to the SAFE Credit Union PAC (previously the CCT) will be on Saturday, January 16, 2021 (postponed in this case due to construction delays) and feature romantic classics, including Ravel’s “Bolero.”

“How can I help the SPO in during this time?”

Well, first of all – STAY HOME!   Yes, music is essential, so listen to CD’s, iTunes, whatever your playback of choice.   Right now, your health is our first concern.

We want to say “thank you” to those of you who have called and written kind words of support.   Rest assured that your SPO will be back in the fall.  Until then, for information or questions about your tickets please email info@sacphilopera.org or call us at 916.476.5975  Like you, we are all based at home, but checking messages and e-mails regularly.   If you have to leave a message, we will call back soon!

Over the past five years, you have helped to build something remarkable here in Sacramento.   The next chapter will begin in 2021 with the return to the renovated SAFE Credit Union PAC.

But first, we can’t wait to see each of you in October.   Stay safe and healthy!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 12, 2020

SACRAMENTO PHILHARMONIC & OPERA ANNOUNCES POSTPONEMENT OF REMAINING 19/20 SEASON CONCERTS

Rescheduled amidst concerns of current community health issues

Dear Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera Patrons,

In light of the ongoing community health concerns and Governor Newsom’s recommendations last night of cancelling all gatherings of over 250 people, we have made the decision to postpone our remaining 2019/20 season concerts until the fall. This includes this weekend’s performance of Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony on March 13th/14th and our Opera Finale on April 25th. By postponing, we can do our part to keep the community safer and ensure that our musicians and patrons enjoy the music when the community situation is healthier.

In regard to your current tickets for March 13/14 and/or April 25 we will be providing the opportunity to roll them over to the rescheduled events in the fall or donate the tickets back to the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera.  Please hold onto your current tickets until further updates are provided.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at info@sacphilopera.org

We look forward to seeing you in the fall! Here’s to everyone in the community staying healthy.

Best,
